The Best Waterproof Mascara

 10 best waterproof mascara

It’s often cited as the one product we can't live without, so a great waterproof mascara that’s robust enough to last through sun, sea, sweat and tears is a must have make-up bag addition. Before you invest, have a look at our pick of the best that promise maximum length and full-blown volume alongside their water-resistant credentials.

Clump Defy Waterproof Mascara by Max Factor

We’re massive fans of Max Factor mascaras here at Red HQ – just as good as some of their pricier counterparts, their intense pigments, volumised results and purse friendly price tags make them real make-up bag essentials.
Clump Defy promises to let you apply coat after coat with, as the name suggests, no clumping thanks to a curved ‘well’ in the brush that holds just the right amount of product to load onto lashes without overdoing it. While two to three coats is enough for a full-fringe effect, we’re pleased to report that you could indeed layer up five or six if you wish.
This waterproof version boats all the benefits of its original counterpart, while the water-resistant, anti-smudge credentials make it an ideal summer holiday wash bag addition.

Diorsnow Waterproof Mascara

Adding effortless oomph, volume and added length, Dior’s waterproof mascara does exactly what it says on the tin.
Building up volume stroke by stroke, for maximum effect you’ll need to build up a few coats, but the end result ensures lashes are evenly coated in an intense kohl shade with a product that effortlessly stays put all day.
Quite difficult to remove, invest in a cream cleanser to ensure all traces of product are wiped away at the end of the day.

Semi-Permanent Technical Mascara by Diego Dalla Palma

Enhancing lashes as well as being resistant to both water and smudges, Diego Dalla Palma's mascara is a great beauty buy for the summer.
Leaving lashes feeling soft and volumised (without clumping), this waterproof mascara also claims to be semi permanent. While we haven’t had the chance to fully test it out, the brand claims that after applying the silicone resin for five consecutive days, the black pigment will start to redefine lashes to leave them looking tinted on a more long term basis.
Long lasting and but without even a hint of flaking, this waterproof mascara is quite tricky to take off, with an oil based product needed to fully remove.

Waterproof Lash by Topshop

With a long, straight brush, this mascara takes a bit of getting used to, but once you’ve mastered it, the super-long, super-volumised lashes it leaves you with make it a great high street beauty buy.
Even with a couple of coats loaded onto top and bottom lashes, this managed to resist smudging or flaking off throughout the day and kept lashes looking glossy and defined.
If you’re heading to a wedding or a soppy film at the cinema, make sure you apply this before you go.

High Impact Waterproof Mascara by Clinique

if you can't head to the beach without at least one item from your beauty bag, then it's time to invest in a waterproof mascara.
Competing for top slot, Clinique's High Impact mascara is one of our favourite options.
Just like it's non-waterproof sister, the wand makes it easy to apply and wear all day long from beach to bar and beyond.
No smudges, no flaking - what more could you ask for?

Better Than Waterproof Mascara by Cargo

With an eye-catching name that boasts big promises, we expected a lot from this offering from Cargo.
The medium sized brush is easy to wiggle through lashes and leaves them looking pleasingly longer and fuller after a couple of strokes while the formula really does resist running, smudging and flaking throughout the day. Managing to stay put even throughout an hour-long gym workout, this is a great daytime lash option.
Another bonus? As it forms little ‘tubes’ around each lash, it can easily be removed without eye make-up remover by gently wiping a hot muslin cloth downwards over the eyes (don’t tug), making it great for holidays when you want to streamline your beauty bag.

Eyes to Kill Waterproof Mascara by Giorgio Armani

Encased in a weighty gun metal tube Giorgio Armani’s Eyes to Kill waterproof mascara is an investment luxury beauty buy.
The combination of the innovative asymmetrical designed brush and wet resistant polymore ensures a bold coating that will protect you against the elements. The scientific formula behind the waterproof technology proved to be long-lasting and smudge resistant too – so it’s an ideal choice for summer holiday.
While some mascaras fall prey to thick, gloopy coverage, thisvolumising mascara provides an evenly distributed amount of product onto lashes for a natural-looking finish.

Lash-coat Mascara by By Terry

Despite the fact that there are numerous tried and tester waterproof mascaras on the market, if you still can’t be parted from your everyday lash enhancer, then By Terry’s Lash-coat Mascara is certainly worth investing in ahead of a hot summer holiday.
Working to add a waterproof top coat to your regular mascara, applied to dry mascara, this innovative gel ensures all day smudge protection.  Not only can we readily testify that it really works, it also has the added benefit of not causing the dreaded clumping effect that you’d expect from layering additional product on top of already coated lashes.
Certainly an investment buy, and more expensive than many standalone mascaras, this is definitely worth the spend if you’re completely loyal to your everyday non-waterproof option.

Wonder Waterproof Mascara by Clarins

Not so much a waterproof but a water-resistant choice for your holiday, Clarins' Wonder Waterproof mascara is a great all round buy.
The long wand is ideal for lengthening, while a few coats will give you extra volume too.
But beware, after a full day of holidaywear, it can begin to smudge, so make sure you take extra an strength eye make-up remover to avoid the dreaded panda eye look the morning after a night out.

Hypnôse Star Waterproof Mascara by Lancome

Making a welcome change from block, bright coloured designs, this Lancome mascara is certainly one of the most glamorous-looking beauty products on the market with the faded glittered effect.
If you’re heading to a wedding and dread the tear-stained look then this is a great choice. The dual-sided brush will not only lengthen lashes, but will also whip them into a soft curl to complete your party look.
It can be a bit stubborn to remove, so make sure you invest in a good quality eye make-up remover to avoid sleeping with leftover residue on lashes after a night out.

finding foundation

Q: How do I find the right foundation to match my skin tone?

A: In order to find the perfect match for your skin, you need to look at the color of your jawline and neck as well as your face, says Boston-based makeup artist Julie Michaud. Matching foundation color to your jawline will prevent a makeup line.

The best place to test foundation is in a department store. To test a color, apply and blend stripes of the three closest shades of foundation to your jawline. Then, find some natural light and see if you can still see the makeup. A perfect match will be invisible on your face

Long Lasting Lipstick Beauty Trend

A wealth of bold, eye-popping lip colour stormed down the catwalk this season. Whether teamed with nude skin, strong brows, smoky eyes or all three, these are lipstick looks to take you through from day to night. But who wants the bother of reapplying their lippy throughout the day? Luckily, with an accompanying stream of long-lasting lipsticks hitting the shelves, we no longer have to. Read on for our favourite lipstick looks of the season and the best longwearing lip colours to help you achieve them.

We loved the full red lips seen at Helmut Lang, the ultimate sultry look for an evening.
Created by make-up maestro Hannah Murray, she used a blend ofNARS Satin Lip Pencil in Golshan and Het Loo, £17, saying ‘I used a lip brush to apply, and diffusing the pigment around the edges with a domed blending brush that’s usually used on the eyes to get more intense colour.’

Liquid Lipstick in Rose Symphony by L’Oreal Paris

There’s always room for another lipstick in your make-up bag and this new one from L’Oreal Paris is the easiest way to wear a pop of colour.
Looks like a lipstick, stays put like a lip stain and softens like a balm– we are in love.

It may look bold and a little too statement for some, but this red lipis easier to create than you may think – trust us.
Created by make-up artist Tom Pecheux, the focus was entirely on the lip using a combination of MAC Red Lipmix, £14, topped withPigment in Basic Red, £17, whilst the eyelids were kept super subtle with a Pure White Paint Stick, £17, to highlight the lash line and brow bone.

Hyaluronic Sheer Rouge in Bed Red by By Terry

By Terry lipsticks never disappoint, with their rich pigments and long-lasting power, and this is one of our favourite shades.
Always firmly placed in our make-up bags it’s the perfect evening shade, and although it looks a little dark, it’s very striking and super flattering on most skin tones and complexions. We also got told our teeth looked whiter with this lipstick on – an added bonus.

When make-up maestro Wendy Rowe picked up a red lipstick backstage at Burberry’s SS13 show, lipstick was confirmed as a major trend for the season. At first, it might not seem a particularly bold beauty move, but after seasons of pared-back beauty looks in signature neutral colours, this was a truly exciting moment for the brand.
Teamed with healthy, illuminated skin and tousled, undone hair, this was a fresh and modern take on a red lip that makes it just as suited to doing the weekly shop as it is to weekend cocktails. To make the colour go the distance, do as Rowe did and apply your colour in layers, blotting as you go, to really press the pigment into lips.

Superstay 14 Hour Lipstick by Maybelline

Proving that long-lasting lip colours don’t always have to come in stain-form, Maybelline’s latest lipsticks offer an impressive stay-put, non-drying formula for a pleasing high street price.
While the colour might not last quite as long as the 14 hours that the name suggests, there’s no colour transfer or bleeding and the formula is so weightless you’ll forget you’re wearing it.Try applying a thin layer straight from the bullet (the shape of the bullet makes application a dream) then blot: this will lift any excess moisture but leave the pigment, perfect if you like a matter finish.

Hydrating Long-Lasting Lipstick by Sisley

We admit that this might be more of an investment beauty buy, but if you’re a lipstick lover it could be a worthwhile one. Delivering exactly what the name professes, the colour is super-hydrating and extremely long-lasting – team Red was so impressed, we awarded these lipsticks a Best of Beauty 2012 award.
For a long-lasting red pout a la Burberry girls, try this classic red shade (Rouge Passion, a favourite of Red beauty director Annabel Meggeson) and apply with a lip brush to really allow the colour to sink into your lips and ensure you end up with a perfect edge.

The pink lips trend was one of our favourite beauty trends of the season – modern, wearable and just downright cool, we’ve been attempting to replicate the bold, almost-neon pink look as seen at Giles since it’s SS13 showcase. The key to making your lipstick long-lasting here is all in the prep: backstage, Lucia Pieroni first dabbed foundation onto the models lips which helped to lock-in the colour by giving the pigments something to cling onto.Try this at home and you’ll also neturalise any colour in your lips so you end up with a super-bright, super-bold finish just like the Giles girls.

Rouge Unlimited Supreme Matte Lipstick by Shu Uemura

When you’re looking for a long-lasting lipstick, the theory goes that the more matte the finish, the more time it’ll spend on your lips. Step forward these super-matte colours from Shu Uemura, which last the day and defy the myth that matte lipsticks are hard and drying. Instead, the soft formulas glide over lips for full, bold coverage (even after just one swipe) that doesn’t sink into lines or cracks.
Just remember to invest in a good make-up remover to take it off at the end of the day – an oil-based cleanser will help to break down the seriously intense pigments.

Megatint Long Wear Lip Color by Smashbox

Choosing a long-lasting lipstick doesn’t have to mean committing to a bold colour. These lipsticks from Smashbox have all the softening, nourishing benefits of a balm and offer subtle colour pops that are just as hard working and longwearing as other richer lipstick colours.
Keep these to hand in your holiday beauty bag: the moisturising properties soothe dry, tired lips while the sheer, understated colour finishes are perfect for sporting from beach-to-bar alongside a slick of mascara and beach-tousled hair.

Sometimes, it takes a bit of time and commitment to ensure your lipstick really lasts. Take Jason Wu’s SS13 make-up look as a case in point: make-up artist Diane Kendal needed five different steps to achieve the perfect, cherry-red lip.
First up, a coating of bright red lip liner was applied over the entire mouth before a darker, richer liner shade was applied just around the mouth outline. Next up came a coating of pinky-red lipstick, followed by a pink liquid lipstick applied to the centre of the mouth. Finally everything was toped off with a sprinkling of orange-red pigment.
To offset the perfect, feminine make-up, team with boyishbrows and give hair a modern, almost masculine finish: a slicked-back up-do works well.

Precision Lip Pencil in Nude by No7

They might have a bit of an outdated or old-fashioned perception attached to them, but one of the oldest and still one of the best tricks in the beauty book to give your lipstick extra staying power is to fill in your lips with lip liner pre-colour.
Though you could match the colour of your liner to the colour of your lipstick, a good nude pencil will act as the perfect bonder for whatever you put on next without altering its colour. This offering from No7 is a great suits-all shade and is one of make-up maestroLisa Eldridge’s favourite products. Plus, the twist-up applicator means there’s never any need to sharpen.

Another one of our favourite lip looks from the season, we love Missoni’s fluoro matte lips that were made gorgeously wearable when paired with natural, velvety skin (a huge skin trend for AW13) andbold brows.
Working her magic backstage again, Lucia Pieroni wanted a ‘felt tip effect’ finish and achieved it by mixing orange, pink and white pigments from MAC (gorgeous, but ultra drying – make sure you prep your lips with lots of balm first if you want to try this at home).
The result? A pretty ‘tequila sunrise’ shade that bleeded out from an intense centre to paler edges.

Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick by Stila

They might look like glosses, but housed inside these sleek tubes from Stila are actually creamy, densely pigmented liquid lipsticks that, as the name suggests, are designed to glide onto lips and stay put all day.
The coverage is dramatic and full even after one (light) stroke and quickly dries to a matte finish, making these the perfect lip colours to use if you want to work the bold lips beauty trend but don’t want to have to fuss over reapplying your colour every few hours.
Though the sponge applicator is perfect for filling in the majority of your lips, use a lip liner or lip brush for the edges for a more precise finish. And work quickly – once the colour dries, it stays budge-proof for hours.

Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain by YSL

Like a three-in-one, these hybrid lip colours from YSL have the colour payoff of a lipstick, the staying power of a stain (without any of the dryness) and the shine of a gloss (without any of the stickiness).
With an impressive shade range of flattering, wearable colours and a petal-shaped applicator that makes application a dream.  So it’s not hard to understand why they’ve quickly become make-up bag essentials at Red HQ for those times when we want our lipstick to last from dusk to dawn.
